Church Leadership

Pastor

In the words of our church constitution, the minister “shall have charge of the pulpit ministrations,” highlighting the preaching ministry of the pastor. The pastor also provides pastoral care and support for the various ministries of the congregation, as well as helping to provide visionary leadership for the congregation as whole.

Gilfillan Memorial Church is a congregational church, which means that it is the members who ultimately lead the church and make decisions for the congregation’s future. Congregationalism believes strongly in the “priesthood of all believers” (1 Peter 2:4-5), and Congregational churches trust that God will give the church wisdom by the Spirit for their life and ministry together. In this model the church does recognise the spiritual gifts of certain members to play specific roles in the life of the congregation, and here is a brief description of each office and how they help lead the church into fruitfulness and faithfulness.

Elders

The Church Session, made up of the Elders and the Pastor, oversees “the spiritual affairs of the Congregation,” as described in our constitution. This includes the worship and preaching through the church year, the various ministries to the church and community, pastoral care for members, and coordinating our giving towards charitable and missionary causes.

Managers

As described in our constitution, the Managers “shall have charge of the Congregation’s secular affairs.” This includes (but is not limited to) overseeing the properties of the church, the finances of the congregation, special fellowship events, and technology outreach.
